What Smart Marketers Know about Music Promotion
By · CommentsOn a flight to my Sacramento gig. Pilot on the speaker says that according to Men’s Health magazine, the healthy benefit of red wine is Resveratrol, and the wine with the highest level of Resveratrol is California Merlot. The lowest benefit comes from the Cabernet Sauvignon (my favorite).
Oh, and just by chance, this Southwest flight stocks the California Merlot.
Product placement.
When you start paying attention you see it everywhere. It’s not just in the movies.
That’s the way it is.
We live in a commercial world. If you are reading this, you live in a commercial world. You can’t even make a stop in the men’s room without seeing ads.
In Las Vegas, advertisers have big trucks driving up and down the strip with billboards on them. Highway billboards line the roads to and from the airport.
Brand awareness.
The top marketers say they are competing for eyeballs and brain cells.
Even Las Vegas, already a world famous city, spends millions each year on “What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas” and other campaigns.
The cable TV companies overwhelm your eyes and ears with commercials for the cable channel you are already watching anyway!
Dan Kennedy, acknowledged as one of the top marketers on the planet, tells the story of one of his clients, a dentist. This man is the only dentist in town, the only dentist for miles around. He still advertises because “it pays to advertise”. He has teeth cleaning specials and other monthly promotions.
Why?
He’s the only dentist in town. Why advertise?
He says he wants to increase his market share. By that he means that without winning those eyeballs and brain cells he would have more and more people forgetting to take good care of their teeth. That would mean he would not be serving his community (fans) and would lose revenue.
So, what does this have to do with you, the Music Artist reading these words?
Simply this.
If you really believe in your talent and want more people to know and love your music, you need to compete for those eyeballs and brain cells.
I know how much some of you hate to market. You’re an “artist”.
You’re concerned you’ll be accused of “selling out”.
You believe fans should seek you out instead of you seeking them out.
Well, it could happen, of course, fans could find you. But, can you imagine how much sooner all your dreams will come true if you seek new fans?
“How”, you say, “I don’t have enough money to hire a PR firm. I don’t even know where to begin”.
That’s where we come into the picture.
